Q: Is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu right for me?

A: If you are interested in learning practical, effective self-defense techniques and improving your physical and mental conditioning, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu may be right for you. We recommend that you come and observe class before making a decision.

Q: What is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

A: Jiu-Jitsu means "the gentle art." Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has its roots in Kosen Judo, which was original comprised of Fusen-Ryu Jujutsu and Judo. It was taken by the Gracie family, most notably Helio Gracie, and adapted to emphasize the use of leverage, the opponent's weight, ground-fighting, and submissions. More information about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is available at Wikipedia.

Q: How long will it take me to get my black belt?

A: There is no simple answer to this question. Typically attaining a black belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu will require many years of hard work and dedication. If your only goal is to reach black belt status, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu might not be for you.

Q: Why does Gracie Jiu-Jitsu focus on ground fighting and grappling?

A: 95% of all violent attacks and street fights end up on the ground. If you are unprepared and overpowered, this can be a very dangerous place. However, with proper training, you can learn to neutralize your opponents advantage, even if your opponent is significantly larger and stronger than you are.

Q: What does a typical class consist of?

A: Classes begin with a variety of warm ups including stretches, cardiovascular conditioning, and light strength and endurance training. After warming up, the instructor usually teaches two or three techniques. Students are given ample time to practice the moves with a partner to learn the techniques. After class, students often "roll" to practice their techniques under more realistic conditions.
